Lost in Random is an action-adventure computer game created by Zoink and published by Digital Arts. Component of the EA Originals program, the game was released for Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X and also Collection S in September 2021.

Welcome to Random, the kingdom of the dice
As developer Zoink dares to a completely new brand, which many of you certainly not have on the radar, first a few words to the story: we are in the Kingdom of Random, which is ruled by a dark queen. More specifically at the beginning of our approx. 10- to 15-hour travel in a fields, the home of the sisters Even and Odd. And if you have already noticed the allusions to cubes here: they are actually swiveling and pivoting from Lost in Random.
You can imagine the little puzzles as objects of power, which was once distributed on many shoulders, but now lies alone at the queen. The ominously exhausting lady is in possession of the last intact cube and decides with a throw on the twelfth birthday of each child about which his or her future should lie. A diced one, it goes after a field, the place where the poorest of the poor in factories build fearsome robots. On the other hand, a six diced, the magnificent palace of Sechstopia beckons, in which the ruler lives mostly.
And how coincidence wants, it goes to Odd against her will to Sechstopia, and for her younger sister begins a cumbersome rescue mission by the six cities Randoms. You can imagine the places as a winding level in which you move freely, but they serve more than independent backdrops and are little interactive. But so that EVEN is not prosperous to the army of the queen, she encounters - purely random, knows - Dice Dicey, on whose special role we come in detail.
At first, however, it was said that the linear story accompanied by an excellent English narrator is anything but original. You will be presenting the typical Rette Person XY from the claws of the evil story. But that, and that really liked that very much, with Even has a warm, cozy main character, and also enriched with plenty of quirky NPCs, which could also come from a Pixar film. Successful characters that give a fundamentally serious topic a feel-good atmosphere together with a beautiful portion of humor.
In general, you realize developers Zoink on that there has been a lot of love in the game world. Everything looks like the feather of Tim Burton: Surreal and gloomy, but with a cheerful touch. It is only a pity that the NPCs of the slack-bearing, upright fish resources over wolves and disguised pointed mice are often repeated. Here, more variety in character design has helped that Random has even more believed than it is already.
Technology Check: We did not have to fight our great pleasure on the PS5 with bugs and other technical defects. The game runs smoothly and who likes the special fitting style, gets him highly dissolved on the TV.
On the other hand, we have at the camera, which had specifically in combat events and to the walls. But we hook more under small things and did not disturb us very much. Not that the collision query when jumping protrusions did not always want as we did. EVEN stands on a projection, the cross button lights up. If we press him, it jumps down. That too can be solved better, but also here: category little things.
The combat system, the greatest strength and weakness
Come to the great unique selling point of Lost in Random, its fresh combat system that combines real-time struggles from the third person perspective with a card game or deck building system.
Opponents combat Even and Dicey always in closed combat arenars. You run through the cities and swobs, for example, a gate, and robotic knights, robot birds and robot dogs slowly come to you.
And now the trick: EVEN is only equipped with a twelve, with which they shoot crystals from their opponents, but can not harm them. The crystals collected with a hard sprint or a hollytroll, invites you to set up your card deck and automatically pulls a card per charge. In this way you can have up to five cards on your hand .
Which cards are there? On the cards, your weapons for even, like a heavy hammer, a short sword or a flashbow. But with them you can also act magic, which slow down your opponents in the arena, summon a harm to the spirit, Even heal and, and, and. A total of 35 cards can be found in the course of the game or buys them at the dealer by coins collected in the fight or in the game world.
The playing cards, all of which have a value between zero and three, you can not simply play out at will. As soon as a card is in your deck, you can dice dice. The time is frozen and continues to run if you harm an opponent or finish the dice mode.
If the little dice has only two eye numbers (one and two) at the beginning, he gets more in the course of the plot, which also possible combinations of the cards. An example: a five diced, you slowly slow down your enemies for two points to paint them for three points in real time with the hammer. Incidentally, all weapons are using and shatters after a certain number of strokes. So you always have to scream a new attack strategy.
But why is all the strength and weakness now? On the one hand, the combat system is a great strength of lost in random, as it is something new to stand out from other action adventures and simply works very well. The combination of cards also makes a lot of fun and the hit feedback must not hide truly. If we meet with a bow velvet with explosive arrows or conjured bombs our opponents, feel the wonderfully powerful.
But it is also a weakness of Lost in Random, as the struggles offer too little variety due to lack of opponent diversity and a not too large map decks. In addition, we were not required away from all too heavy boss fights. Fights, with a few exceptions, only go into the length due to several opponent waves. For five hours, the fun does, after seven hours, the skirmishes are already monotonous and after ten hours we have rolled with the eyes with every fight.
The problems on balancing are also noticeable when buying the cards. Already half of the game we had bought all cards. By fighting coins received, which also hide in the game world in small vases, were thus useless.
Board Game Arenas: For a little variety during the fighting, you must run from time to time of a chess piece by cubes either to the end of a board games arena or fulfill a given target. If Dicey is used, the figure moves forward depending on the spicy number.
An example: In the middle of a rectangular combat arena, it is important to destroy a cannon. If our big character is ahead by Dicey, it can land on a field of action through which another cannon appears on the field. A quick shot with the twinkle on the detonator and she lands a hit. The game repeats her until the enemy cannon is destroyed.
The board games are generally a good idea, but would still be far more varied and challenging. Often they run out on normal fighting, in which only your figure must advance to the end of the arena, is stopped in between enemies, which we must then defeat first.
Due to the duration of monotons, but at the core funny combat system we would therefore recommend to enjoy the fantasy adventure in smaller portions and occasionally to rotate your card deck in the menu with fresh magic. Although your alternative deck may not be so powerful, you discover new combinations and have longer motivating variety during the fighting.
The thing with the heart blood
But we do not want to dismiss you with so much complex from the test, which has not earned lost in random. Zoink has been an atmospheric and basic sympathetic adventure here. One, which sets out with his optional story mode or generally quite simple difficulty levels of younger or little gaming-experienced persons.
And so that the atmosphere does not look too cryptic, we want to dismiss you with a small example: On Even's arduous path to Sechstopia, we met at the edge of a guitar player and had to listen to his beautiful solo for three minutes. It's just a small thing, but exactly in such moments we have noticed how much Zoink random sucks life. So you can overlook the quite obvious quaints, awaits you a fresh, pretty adventure that stands out from the Action Adventure Unit Breis.
